For Illustrators
All illustrators seeking work need a terrific portfolio to show what they can do. At the SCBWI Spring Clean, you will have the opportunity to get feedback from industry professionals as well as your peers. Here’s what to do:
Submit, in PDF form (no original art accepted) 3-5 portfolio samples. These could be items already in your portfolio, pages from a dummy you’re working on, art you create anew, or some combination of the above.
Need an idea? If this is all new to you, imagine you are re-illustrating a well-known classic tale, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Create 3-5 pieces of art that would be part of your unique version.
Need a few tips?
• Include only samples that look like they could be part of a story.
• Use samples that “speak” with the same “voice,” if not the same medium.
• If you are showing a character multiple times, be consistent!
• Avoid being generic, sloppy, or half-hearted. Make the viewer care!
• Include only your best three pieces. If you are not excited about them, it will show.
• Don’t be afraid. You’ve got nothing to lose, and SCBWI is here to help!
